The other Russia
Germany | 2021 | 43 Minutes | German

Many Russians in Berlin have come to Germany since the end of the Soviet Union 30 years ago. Here in Berlin, they are developing ideas and concepts for a “different”, democratic, open Russia, for which many would be prepared to get back to their homeland as soon as the “wind of change” finally arrives.
The protagonists of the film, Russian civil society activists, alternative cultural workers and political dissidents, are part of a colourful, multicultural Berlin in which they are looking for their place. But they also live as digital nomads or a well-connected global Russian diaspora in a virtual world in between, overcoming borders and remaining committed to their country of origin.
The documentary by filmmaker Kerstin Nickig portrays six dissident Russians in Berlin. Russians in Berlin. Based on their personal stories, the film is interested in the history of the alternative post-reunification Russia and seeks and seeks answers to the question: Where does a democratic Russia go from here?
